Utilizing public record databases to find criminal, civil, or traffic violations in South Florida became a little easier Friday with the release of a semi-comprehensive list of online resources.
Locating and identifying a criminal history, civil litigation or traffic history is but a click away. You can also access resources in relation to inmates, those on probation, parole or community control, sex offenders or missing children, in addition to stolen property or vehicles.
Background checks
· Florida Department of Law Enforcement – For a modest fee of $23.00, you can obtain an individual’s criminal history record in Florida.
· Broward County court records - Search civil, criminal and traffic courts through the Clerk’s office.
· Miami-Dade County court records – Search civil, criminal and traffic courts through the Clerk’s office.
· Monroe County court records – Search civil, criminal and traffic courts through the Clerk’s office.
· Palm Beach County court records – Search civil, criminal and traffic courts through the Clerk’s office.
Sex offenders
· Florida Offender Alert System – Sign up to receive an email alert when a sex offender moves into your neighborhood.

Bad credit: Casey Anthony files for Bankruptcy
Seeking a fresh start in life and a discharge from creditors – including the attorney who masterminded her acquittal in the murder of two-year old Caylee Anthony – Casey Anthony filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy late Friday in Tampa.
Claiming $1,100 in assets and over $792,000 in liabilities, the unemployed Anthony has listed unsecured debts that include $500,000 to Jose Baez for attorney fees and costs for her criminal defense during trial; $145,660 to the Orange County Sheriff’s office for a judgment covering investigative fees and costs; $68,540 to the Internal Revenue Service for unpaid taxes, interest and penalties; and $61,505 to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for investigative costs.
Anthony lists about 80 creditors in her 60-page court filing. For the most part, she claims unsecured debt for attorney’s fees, forensics, investigative and consulting services, in addition to medical and psychiatric services.
Other unsecured debts include Anthony’s mother, Cindy, unpaid credit card bills and even a debt for scuba diving services.
It appears that Anthony has included every possible debt to every possible party.
The bankruptcy filing also shows that Anthony is a defendant in several lawsuits, including one brought by Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez for defamation in the Orange County Circuit Court.
Fernandez-Gonzalez claims that her reputation was destroyed when Anthony told detectives that a babysitter with the same name kidnapped Caylee. Later found dead, police were investigating the 2008 disappearance of the two-year old.
Although strikingly similar, Anthony’s attorney has previously stated that details offered by her to police did not match this particular Fernandez-Gonzalez.
A successful bankruptcy discharge under Chapter 7 would wipe Casey Anthony’s financial slate totally clean. Although a trustee has the right to take possession of and sell non-exempt property and use the sale proceeds to pay creditors, only $1,100 in assets have been claimed by Anthony.
Unemployed and recently completing probation following her previous felony conviction on check fraud charges, the acquitted alleged murderess has nothing to lose by discharging her debts utilizing federal bankruptcy laws.
Although bankruptcy may appear on her credit report for up to ten years, Casey Anthony will always be compared to O.J. Simpson as an acquitted alleged killer.
Now imprisoned in Nevada on unrelated robbery and kidnapping charges, Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of the 1994 double murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman after a lengthy, internationally publicized trial in Los Angeles, California.
The Tampa bankruptcy filing came on the same day that the Fifth District Court of Appeal reversed two of Anthony’s four misdemeanor convictions for providing false information to a law enforcement officer during a missing person investigation.
“The Appellate Court disagreed with Judge Perry’s interpretation of the law arguing that providing ‘false information’ is not the same thing as a false statement,” indicated Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney Eric Schwartzreich. “If the police are questioning you about a robbery and you state that ‘birds do not fly’ – that is a false statement, not false information. That is the distinction the Fifth District Court of Appeal used to reverse the two misdemeanor ‘lying’ convictions.”
Although Anthony was acquitted of first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child, she was found guilty by a Florida jury of lying to police. She was sentenced to one year in jail on each count, to be served consecutively.
Having received substantial credit for time served, Anthony was released days later on July 17, 2011. An appeal by her attorney followed.
“Wiping her debt away through bankruptcy was inevitable,” said John Contini, a Fort Lauderdale criminal defense attorney and author of several real-life crime dramas including Danger Road and Feeling the Heat. “Although forever in debt to those who helped acquit her of killing young Caylee, without the protection of the federal Bankruptcy court, Casey Anthony would never be truly set free.”
Florida celebrates National AMBER Alert Awareness Day
With pictures of missing children flashing across billboards on our streets and highways, alerts over our televisions or radio, or in an email or text message blast, AMBER Alerts are hard to miss.
On Sunday, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey joined Florida’s local, state, federal and private partners to commemorate National AMBER Alert Awareness Day.
January 13th was National AMBER Alert Awareness Day. This year marked the 17th anniversary of the abduction and death of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Texas. She is the girl who the system is now named and whose death and abduction the U.S. Department of Justice remembers on this day.
According to an FDLE release, Florida established its AMBER Alert Plan 13 years ago. It was the second state in the nation to do so. Since the start of Florida’s program, the AMBER Plan has expanded to include billboards, dynamic highway message signs, lottery machines, email and text messages and messages through social media.
The FDLE has encouraged Floridians to sign up for free AMBER Alerts to help locate and quickly recover children when they go missing.
“The AMBER Alert has made a huge difference in law enforcement’s ability to find abducted children,” says Gretl Plessinger, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. “It’s like having thousands of eyes, all at once looking for this child.”
Approximately 40,000 children are reported missing every year in Florida, with the majority of those being reported as runaways. In 2012, the FDLE Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse issued nine AMBER Alerts and 31 Missing Child Alerts.
“Florida’s citizens have been vital to the success of the Florida AMBER Plan,” Commissioner Bailey said. “We encourage Floridians to take a few moments today to sign up to receive AMBER Alert notifications so they can help law enforcement better protect Florida’s children.”
Through their Facebook page, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement offers tips while encouraging people to sign up for its free AMBER Alerts through its website.
More than 20,000 people have signed up to receive Florida AMBER Alerts at www.missingchildrenalert.com.

Recount ordered in Allen West race against Patrick Murphy
The St. Lucie County Canvassing Board ordered late Friday the retabulation of all early votes in the highly contested congressional race between U.S. Representative Allen West (R-Fla.) and his Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy.
The board voted 2-1 in favor of recounting the votes.
St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker indicated that the retabulation would begin at 9 o’clock Saturday morning. A total of 33,379 ballots from all eight days of early voting are in question.
According to Florida law, the race must be within 0.5 percent or less for an official “recount.” A “retabulation” occurs if the canvassing board decides there were mistakes made in the initial counting of ballots.
At issue are the Florida Republican’s bid to overcome a 1,907 vote – or 0.58 percent deficit – in his Treasure Coast race against Democrat Patrick Murphy.
The popular first-term Congressman needs just 249 votes from the retabulation to trigger a statutory recount under Florida law. In an earlier recount, West gained 545 votes from 16,275 early voting ballots, making it theoretically possible to overcome earlier losses.
Both West and Murphy lost more than 800 votes from the 16,275 with approximately 80 percent of the decrease being attributed to the Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy.
“This retabulation of all early votes as the Supervisor of Elections originally planned is a victory for democracy,” stated Jeffery Scott Shapiro, a volunteer attorney on the Allen West campaign. “This restores some level of trust and public confidence in the system…it was the right thing to do.”
Prior to the St. Lucie County Canvassing Board entering its decision, state Division of Elections official David Drury made a “personal” recommendation that all early votes be recounted as several errors had occurred in the initial process.
It had been previously reported that 304 early votes were never counted. There was also the question of a missing “communications log.”
St. Lucie County was the only county within the three county district that Patrick Murphy won. Supervisor Walker previously admitted double-counting some votes and missing others on election night citing “too much haste” trying to get immediate election results.
Since the earlier partial recount, Walker has stated that she was confident that the “vote count is now accurate.”
West has refused to concede the race and has relentlessly pushed for a recount of early votes in St. Lucie County. If a mandatory recount of all votes is forced, both Martin and Palm Beach counties would be recounted as well.
Earlier in the day, St. Lucie County Circuit Court Judge Dan Vaughn denied Congressman West’s request for a recount of early votes indicating that he did not have the authority to make such a ruling.
The Peach State: We want Congressman Allen West
From the Sunshine State to the Peach State, Congressman Allen West is in high demand.
Even before U.S. Rep. Allen West has been officially counted out in the hotly contested race for Florida’s 18th Congressional District, Republican officials in Georgia have offered him an opportunity to return home.
West is a native of Atlanta.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the freshman Congressman would be welcome with open arms.
“I would be glad to have him come back to Georgia and at some point run here,” Georgia GOP Chair Sue Everhart told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I would certainly try to help him because he has done his job. The way he ran his race didn’t in any way interfere with the job he did. He ran as a Republican, a conservative Republican.”
Following redistricting, West moved north from Florida’s 22nd Congressional District to run for re-election. The popular Congressman and Tea Party favorite has not conceded defeat against his Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy, and is demanding a full recount.
A West campaign spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
Everhart concluded that Congressman West is “one of the finest congressmen this country’s ever had.”

Stanley Blumenthal and Dick Farrel talk politics on Yom Kippur
An interesting guest returns to AM 740 WSBR and AM 1470 WWNN on Yom Kippur as veteran radio host Dick Farrel fills in on The Credit Report with Bill Lewis.
Comrade Stanley Blumenthal - an “independent socialist” congressional candidate – is making a return appearance to local political radio.
Blumenthal, an eccentric 87 year-old retired Merchant Marine and self described Socialist, is making his second run for Congress an NPA for US Congress in Florida’s District 25. He is running against Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Miami) and Eddie Gonzalez, a Hialeah man who recently garnered attention by legally changing his name to VoteForEddie.com.
Spending tens of thousands of dollars with his full-page advertisements in The Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel, Blumenthal wrote about the economic threat posed by communist China, urged Americans to by “patriotic” T-bills and warned that neither political party would solve America’s economic problems.
“The American Dream has been outsourced to commie China, India, Mexico, Brazil, etc. by the money hungry job creators looking for the biggest bang for their buck treating their American workers like disposable cups and not caring about our USA problems,” Blumenthal stated.
Concluding his manifesto, Blumenthal chimed: “We are a big country so why are most of our jobs in the small and medium businesses? Shouldn’t the biggies like GE, IBM, Motorola, etc be made to supply their fair share of jobs? Shall we let commie China, etc get the heavy big high employment industries and the USA the small stuff? A Marxist principal: Workers should be paid enough to move the goods and services off the shelves. Anyone disagree? Note, Communist run China is now considered to have the 2nd highest economy next to ours in the world and moving up fast.”
Blumenthal promises to “shake-up” the political establishment as a “Socialist” or “American Patriotic Communist.” In a race that boosts a strong Republican incumbent in Mario Diaz-Balart and the “VoteForEddie.com” domain name as a candidate, Elect Comrade Blumenthal is the motto of his campaign.
Florida’s 25th Congressional District includes parts of Broward, Collier and Miami-Dade counties.
